    The frustrated Brownian motion of nonlocal solitary waves

    We investigate the evolution of solitary waves in a nonlocal medium in the presence of disorder. By using a perturbational approach, we show that an increasing degree of nonlocality may largely hamper the Brownian motion of self-trapped wave-packets. The result is valid for any kind of nonlocality and in the presence of non-paraxial effects.     Green synthesis of gold nanoparticles using Kiwifruit juice

    The use of kiwifruit juice as a source of metal-reducing and stabilizing agents for the production of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was investigated. The reaction was carried out in batch by mixing appropriate amounts of kiwifruit juice and gold(III) chloride solution. The formation of AuNPs was monitored by measuring the intensity of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band of gold. The effects of temperature (20-60 °C), pH (8-12) and gold-to-polyphenol ratio (GPR) were investigated. Characterisation of AuNPs by XRD, DLS and zeta-potential measurements showed that they were highly crystalline, with an average hydrodynamic diameter of about 50 nm and a zeta-potential ranging between -29.2 and -21.7 mV. Under the best reaction conditions (60 °C, pH 9, GPR = 5 mol Au3+/mol GAE), AuNPs with an average size of about 30 nm were produced. The results obtained suggest that kiwifruit juice is a suitable medium for the production of small-sized and stable AuNPs

    Statistics of soliton-bearing systems with additive noise

    We present a consistent method to calculate the probability distribution of soliton parameters in systems with additive noise. Even though a weak noise is considered, we are interested in probabilities of large fluctuations (generally non-Gaussian) which are beyond perturbation theory. Our method is a further development of the instanton formalism (method of optimal fluctuation) based on a saddle-point approximation in the path integral. We first solve a fundamental problem of soliton statistics governing by noisy Nonlinear Schr\"odinger Equation (NSE). We then apply our method to optical soliton transmission systems using signal control elements (filters, amplitude and phase modulators).Comment: 4 pages. Submitted to PR

    Statistics of a noise-driven Manakov soliton

    We investigate the statistics of a vector Manakov soliton in the presence of additive Gaussian white noise. The adiabatic perturbation theory for Manakov soliton yields a stochastic Langevin system which we analyze via the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation for the probability density function (PDF) for the soliton parameters. We obtain marginal PDFs for the soliton frequency and amplitude as well as soliton amplitude and polarization angle. We also derive formulae for the variances of all soliton parameters and analyze their dependence on the initial values of polarization angle and phase.Comment: Submitted to J.Phys.A: Mathematical and Genera

    Research on university level mathematics education is a fast developing field as evident in the growth of the CERME University Mathematics Education (hereafter UME) Thematic Working Group. TWG14 was launched in CERME7 (Nardi, González-Martín, Gueudet, Iannone & Winslþw, 2011). After CERME8 (Nardi, Biza, González-Martín, Gueudet, & Winslþw, 2013), its leader team – in collaboration with TWG14 participants and others – worked towards a Research in Mathematics Education Special Issue on Institutional, sociocultural and discursive approaches to research in university mathematics education (Nardi, Biza, González-Martín, Gueudet & Winslþw, 2014) which focused on research that is conducted in the spirit of the following theoretical frameworks: Anthropological Theory of the Didactic, Theory of Didactic Situations, Instrumental and Documentational Approaches, Communities of Practice and Inquiry and Theory of Commognition

    Searching for galactic axions through magnetized media: QUAX status report

    Noise-induced perturbations of dispersion-managed solitons

    We study noise-induced perturbations of dispersion-managed solitons by developing soliton perturbation theory for the dispersion-managed nonlinear Schroedinger (DMNLS) equation, which governs the long-term behavior of optical fiber transmission systems and certain kinds of femtosecond lasers. We show that the eigenmodes and generalized eigenmodes of the linearized DMNLS equation around traveling-wave solutions can be generated from the invariances of the DMNLS equations, we quantify the perturbation-induced parameter changes of the solution in terms of the eigenmodes and the adjoint eigenmodes, and we obtain evolution equations for the solution parameters. We then apply these results to guide importance-sampled Monte-Carlo simulations and reconstruct the probability density functions of the solution parameters under the effect of noise.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure

    Biologic therapy and spinal radiographic progression in patients with axial spondyloarthritis : a structured literature review

    We aimed to perform a structured literature review of spinal radiographic progression, as assessed by the modified Stoke Ankylosing Spondylitis Spine Score (mSASSS), in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) or nonradiographic axial spondyloarthritis (nr-axSpA) treated with biologic therapy. Searches were limited to English language manuscripts published in the 11 years prior to 9 July 2019. Randomized controlled trials, open-label extensions (OLEs) and observational studies reporting mSASSS progression in patients with AS or nr-axSpA treated with biologics were eligible for inclusion. Bias was assessed using the methodological index for nonrandomized studies (MINORS) tool. Among the 322 studies identified in the literature search, 23 (11 OLEs and 12 cohort studies) met the eligibility criteria and were selected for inclusion. Most studies reported mSASSS progression in patients with AS receiving tumor necrosis factor inhibitor (TNFi) treatment. One study reported mSASSS progression in patients with AS treated with secukinumab, an interleukin-17A inhibitor. The mean (range) MINORS score was 11.3 (7\u201315) for the 15 noncomparative studies and 15 (12\u201322) for the 8 comparative studies. Although results of the individual studies were variable, mSASSS progression in patients with AS was generally minimal and slow with long-term TNFi therapy. Moreover, odds ratios for the likelihood of mSASSS progression with/without TNFi favoured TNFi therapy in several of the cohort studies. The rate of mSASSS progression following continuous secukinumab treatment was low and remained stable over 4 years. Of two studies reporting progression in patients with nr-axSpA treated with TNFis, one showed no mSASSS progression; however, the lack of control limited comparative conclusions

    IP6K3 and IPMK variations in LOAD and longevity: evidence for a multifaceted signaling network at the crossroad between neurodegeneration and survival

    Several studies reported that genetic variants predisposing to neurodegeneration were at higher frequencies in centenarians than in younger controls, suggesting they might favor also longevity. IP6K3 and IPMK regulate many crucial biological functions by mediating synthesis of inositol poly- and pyrophosphates and by acting non-enzymatically via protein–protein interactions. Our previous studies suggested they affect Late Onset Alzheimer Disease (LOAD) and longevity, respectively. Here, in the same sample groups, we investigated whether variants of IP6K3 also affect longevity, and variants of IPMK also influence LOAD susceptibility. We found that: i) a SNP of IP6K3 previously associated with increased risk of LOAD increased the chance to become long-lived, ii) SNPs of IPMK, previously associated with decreased longevity, were protective factors for LOAD, as previously observed for UCP4. SNP-SNP interaction analysis, including our previous data, highlighted phenotype-specific interactions between sets of alleles. Moreover, linkage disequilibrium and eQTL data associated to analyzed variants suggested mitochondria as crossroad of interconnected pathways crucial for susceptibility to neurodegeneration and/or longevity. Overall, data support the view that in these traits interactions may be more important than single polymorphisms. This phenomenon may contribute to the non-additive heritability of neurodegeneration and longevity and be part of the missing heritability of these traits
